Email Supermarkets

If we want to see Fairtrade certified products go from niche to mainstream, we need to let our supermarkets know we are looking for and will buy Fairtrade products.

You can send an email to supermarkets from here to encourage them to stock a wider range of Fairtrade goods.

Who are you emailing?

In New Zealand there are two major supermarket organizations – Progressive Enterprises Limited (PEL) and Foodstuffs (NZ) Limited – but they operate differently from one another.

Progressive Enterprises directly operates Foodtown, Woolworth's and Countdown supermarkets, and is the franchise coordinator for FreshChoice and SuperValue supermarkets.

In contrast to Progressive Enterprises, Foodstuffs is made up of multiple franchise members. The organization consists of three separate, regionally based, retailer-owned co-operative companies and a Federation body. Each regional company operates entirely autonomously with its own Board and management.

The managing director of Progressive Enterprises has authority over all PEL’s supermarkets, while Foodstuffs has a separate CEO for each of its companies and multiple retail members to consider during decision-making.

For this reason, we believe we will make more progress for Fairtrade if we target the managing director of Progressive Enterprises by email, while encouraging individuals to make enquiries at their local Foodstuffs stores.

Enter your email address details in the box provided and press ‘send’ to let Progressive’s MD Peter Smith know you want more Fairtrade products in your local Foodtown, Woolworth's and Countdown stores.

FAO Peter Smith – Please stock more Fairtrade products

Dear Peter

I am a regular customer at one of your supermarkets.

I try to buy Fairtrade-certified products whenever possible, because Fairtrade is empowering millions of disadvantaged growers and producers in the developing world to work their way out of poverty. Unfortunately my local supermarket only stocks a very limited range of Fairtrade products and they are not easy to find.

Internationally there are thousands of Fairtrade-certified products available – including fruit, sugar, rice, juices, nuts as well as coffee, tea and chocolate. If you stock more Fairtrade products, I’ll buy them!

Please listen to the growing number of concerned Kiwi consumers and stock more Fairtrade products in your supermarkets to guarantee a fair deal for growers and their communities in the developing world.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
